Grambling resident Douglas Porter, who had a five-decade long career in coaching and athletic administration, will be inducted into the College Hall of Fame.
The National Football Foundation is expected to announce the 2008 class on Wednesday. Porter appeared on the lower-classification ballot
A former assistant at Grambling State under Eddie Robinson, Porter was a head coach at former Division I-AA programs Mississippi Valley (from 1961-65) and Howard University (from 1974-78) and finally at Division II Fort Valley State (from 1979-94). He was a longtime

Grambling State Baseball to Make Postseason Appearance
GSU Sports Information
For the first time since 2002, the Grambling State Tiger baseball team will participate in postseason play as the team will participate in the 2008 SWAC Baseball Tournament on the campus of Southern University beginning on Wednesday, May 14.
By virtue of Southern’s three-game sweep over Prairie View A&M this past weekend, Grambling State finished second place outright in the SWAC West and earned the division’s No. 2 seed. As a result, the Tigers will battle the No. 3 seed from the SWAC East in the tournament’s opening game on Wednesday, May 14 at 10 a.m.
In Grambling’s last postseason appearance, which was in Shreveport under longtime head coach Wilbert Ellis, the Tigers were seeded third and opened the tourney with a 6-5 upset over the SWAC East’s No. 1 seed Alcorn State . GSU dropped a 17-15 shootout to Jackson State in the second round but bounced back in the consolation bracket with a 12-8 win over Texas Southern. The Tigers fell a game short of advancing to the championship round as they were eliminated in the semifinals after a 7-2 loss to Jackson State .
With no player on the active roster with SWAC Tournament experience, Grambling does possess a seasoned tournament veteran in second-year head coach Barret Rey. As a player and a coach at Southern University, Rey appeared in 14 consecutive SWAC Tournaments before missing his first-ever tourney last year.
“I’m happy that we reached the SWAC Tournament because that was one of our goals entering the season since we fell short on the final day of the season last year,” said Rey. “With that behind us, we have to turn our focus on playing well in the postseason because every game in the tournament is big.”
Grambling still has one more regular season game to play as they travel to Alcorn State , Miss. on Wednesday to battle Alcorn State at 4 p.m.

Grambling legend Bibbs will not return to take over former program
GRAMBLING — Nearly three weeks into the search for a new Grambling State women’s basketball coach, it remains unclear who will replace David “Rusty” Ponton.
We now know, however, who it will not be: GSU product Patricia Bibbs.
Bibbs, currently head coach at North Carolina A&T, called Grambling athletics director Troy Mathieu on Tuesday and removed her name from consideration.
“He told me to think about it, to sleep on it,” Bibbs said. “I love my school, and I will always love my school, but I have to do what’s best for me and my family — and that’s stay here.” The rest of the story
Grambling Defense Dominates Black & Gold Game
GSU Sports Information
After a consistent effort throughout the spring, the Grambling State Tiger defense concluded the end of spring drills in fine fashion as the Black team defeated the Gold team 28-12 at Robinson Stadium during the annual Black & Gold Game before more than 1,000 spectators on Saturday afternoon.
The black team began the game in style as they forced starting tailback Cornelius Walker to fumble on the opening drive. After the fumble, the defense continued to have the starting offense’s number as they recorded a three-and-out to claim an early 5-0 lead using a modified scoring system.
The offense finally began to settle down on the game’s third drive as wideout Terrance Dunn recorded the gold team’s initial first down with a 10-yard rush. Two plays later, the offense picked up another first down after a pass interference call but the drive stalled once again as the defense netted another point for a 6-0 advantage.
With the second units in, the result was the same in the beginning as the black team claimed a 7-0 margin with a three-and-out. However, the offense finally came to life on the ensuing drive as redshirt freshman Kenneth Batiste broke free after catching a short pass from quarterback Greg Dillion en route to a 72-yard touchdown reception.
The defense quickly bounced back from the setback and held the offense scoreless for the next seven drives. On the eighth drive, it took another big play by the gold team to score as quarterback Brandon Landers connected with Nick Lewis for a 48-yard touchdown reception.
From that point, the contest was all defense once again as the unit closed out the game in style with two goalline stands.
As a team, the offense netted 420 (293 P, 127 R) yards with Walker leading GSU on the ground with 82 yards on 20 carries. Landers completed 22-of-37 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown while Nick Lewis finished as the top receiver with five receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, defensive end Christian Anthony and Keefe Hall led GSU in tackles with nine each. Anthony also had three tackles for loss and a sack-and-a-half.
GRAMBLING — Eddie Robinson's family spent the anniversary of his death in quiet reflection, even as efforts to build a museum in his honor continued at an ever-quickening pace.
Robinson, who coached at Grambling State University for 57 years, died from complications related to Alzheimer's on April 3, 2007. He was 88.
"I'm doing OK," Doris Robinson, the football legend's wife for 67 seasons, said Thursday. "Eddie Jr. and I are spending the day together. We've been so lucky to have each other."
Junior, who played for and then coached with his father at Grambling, became deeply involved with the museum project late in Robinson Sr.'s life. He's witnessed firsthand how the coach's passing helped push the initiative along."It has taken off," Robinson Jr. said. "That's so great for the family. It's an inspiration to all of us. We're all so very happy about that."
Help flowed in both from Grambling graduates and from faraway fans. Museum organizers, for instance, set up an informational table during the emotional day that saw Robinson's body lay in respose a year ago in the Capitol rotunda in Baton Rouge — only to run out of brochures in a flurry of activity.

Second-year head coach Rod Broadway and his Tiger football team opens the 2008 season on the road at Football Bowl Subdivision and Western Athletic Conference member Nevada on Aug. 30 at Mackay Stadium in Reno , Nev. It will be the second meeting between the two schools, the first since 1972 when Grambling State defeated the Wolf Pack 37-3. The following weekend on Sept. 6, Grambling State returns home for its home opener against Alcorn State at Robinson Stadium followed by a trip to Natchitoches , La. on Sept. 13 to square off against Northwestern State of the Southland Conference. The meeting against Northwestern State , which will take place at Turpin Stadium, marks the first time since 1974 that the Tigers and Demons will meet on the gridiron.

State begins the first of two consecutive home games at Robinson Stadium highlighted by a 2007 SWAC Championship Game rematch against Jackson State on Sept. 20. On Sept. 27, the Lions of Langston University travels to Grambling and will face the Tigers for the first time since 2002.The month of October begins with Grambling State traveling west to Dallas , Texas for its annual meeting against Prairie View A&M in the State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl on Oct. 4. State will keep its bags packed in the month of November as they’ll play four games on the road. A trip to Itta Bena , Miss. on Nov. 1 to face Mississippi Valley State opens the month followed by an appearance in the third annual Delta Classic 4 Literacy versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock . On Nov. 15, the Tigers will invade the state of Texas for the second time with a trek to Houston for a match-up against Texas Southern. After a bye weekend on Nov. 22, Grambling State wraps up its regular season slate in New Orleans , La. as they face in-state rival Southern University in the 35th edition of the State Farm Bayou Classic at the Louisiana Superdome.“We are very pleased with the 2008 football schedule,” said Grambling State Director of Athletics Troy Mathieu. “We’ve secured four home games for the first time since 2005 in addition to offering a schedule that features a quality set of non-conference and conference opponents. Outside of the trip to Nevada , the schedule also features seven road games within six hours or less of Grambling so our supporters will have the opportunity to follow the Tigers on a weekly basis.”
With the implementation of the seven-game conference schedule by the SWAC that features a rotating slate of conference opponents, Grambling State’s games against Alcorn State and Jackson State will be counted as non-conference games.
“Though we looked into the possibility of playing several other Football Championship Subdivision members with our non-conference games, as we weighed our options, we decided that because the Alcorn State and Jackson State games have historically had a high level of fan interest and have been very successful games in terms of the ability to generate revenue, we worked closely with both schools to keep those games on our schedule,” Mathieu added.

$2M in additional funds available for Robinson museum
|
GRAMBLING — Organizers were expecting the Secretary of State's office to preview the first plans for a proposed Eddie Robinson Museum. They ended up with an additional $2 million in dedicated state funding for the long-delayed project. |
Secretary of State Jay Dardenne initially planned to seek $1.3 million from the Bond Commission for renovation and construction of exhibit space at the former women's gymnasium on the GSU campus.
An engineer charged with preparing the plan, however, subsequently reported that more funds were needed in order to complete the project, Belton said. That included needed improvements in handicapped access, bathroom upgrades and the installation of a banquet hall. The rest of the story
