GSU legends anxious for museum
For Frank Lewis and other Grambling State University football players, a museum for their former beloved head coach can’t get here too soon.“The sooner the better,” said Lewis, an All-American wide receiver for the Tigers during the early 1970s before going on to stardom in the National Football League. “It’s something that is needed so we can all remember the many great things that coach Rob did and accomplished.”
Progress continues to be made in having a permanent tribute to the legendary leader of nearly 60 years at Grambling State University. The former women’s basketball gymnasium on campus will be the site for the museum, which has received strong backing from state government officials and remains high on the list of donation priorities for various organizations and corporate sponsors. »
Grambling names new strength & conditioning coach
The first day heralded quarterback Malcolm Long stepped on South Carolina State’s campus wasn’t pretty.
The South Carolina Mr. Football recipient came to school after his senior year at Gaffney High School out of shape and, at around 270 pounds, way over weight. One of the men that Long repeatedly credited with helping him get back in shape -- SCSU strength and conditioning coach Thomas Stallworth -- is now gone.
Stallworth confirmed that he left his post at SCSU Wednesday to take the same position with Grambling State University.
“I wanted to further my career,” Stallworth said. “I had been at S.C. State for four years, and I just wanted to go to another good program.” The rest of the story
Karim Williams has difficult choice
On Friday, Williams scored a first-round knockout in the main event of a prep boxing exhibition in front of more than 1,000 at Pierce College. Today, Williams is a lineman for the West in the 12th annual East-West All-Star Football Game at 3:30p.m. at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa.
And as for what's next, Williams must soon decide whether to honor a Grambling football scholarship or pursue a professional boxing career under the continued tutelage of former three-time world champion James Toney.
Crespi football coach Jeremiah Ross, a close adviser who cheered Williams on Friday at the boxing event, believes the 6-foot-3, 290-pound Williams is leaning toward football, though nobody is sure.
"I think Karim will end up going to Grambling," Ross said.
You can still find Rusty Ponton around Grambling's campus these days.
Released from his duties as the Grambling women's basketball coach in April, the former coach is finishing his doctorate in education.
The would-be Dr. Ponton, whose tenure at Grambling lasted 11 years, has also been in contact with Grambling recruits like Richwood-product Jasher Blocker. The plan, Ponton said, is to make as smooth a transition as possible for new coach Donnita Drain.
"I'm just trying to make sure none of these young women fall through the cracks," Ponton said. "I just want to see the program flourish and give Coach Drain the best possible head start."
As for what comes next, Ponton says "big names" have contacted him about coaching positions. But the next career move, be it a relocation to a far-flung destination or a teaching position at Grambling, will have to wait until the degree.
"Right now, I'm just focused on walking with my E.D.D. (Doctorate of Education)"
